Public School vs Home School How To Make That Difficult Choice
Public school vs home school. This is a debate which is being held in many homes across the country, as children approach school age and parents are wondering which will be best for their future. The truth is, of course, that there are good arguments for either course of action, and that the best option will depend on individual circumstances. Make sure you take the time out to do your research well before you come to the stage of having to make the final choice. You need to feel confident that your child is being given the best possible preparation for adult life, especially if you decide to take on the job yourself.
There are obvious advantages to the state educational system. Your child will get to be taught by professional teachers who are trained in each individual subject, and so will gain the rounded education afforded by constant contact with knowledgeable professionals. They will also benefit from being able to associate with other children of the same age. They should be able to form friendships and develop a social life on top of their educational activities.
The disadvantages are equally obvious. Although schoolteachers are dedicated professionals who have studied their subject on great depth, they are only able to give one to one teaching on as limited basis. Simple economics dictates that children in school must be taught in classes where the material is given to them all at the same time. This will obviously cause difficulty if there are children who are significantly ahead of, or behind, the level of the majority of the class. The educational system does everything it can to compensate for this by allocating children into class group based on ability, but it can never be a perfect system.
With homeschooling, you can give your children the one on one help which they will never get in the state system. There will not be other children also desperately needing a part of your time. This, of course, puts a demand on you to be able to give this time to your child, but if you are able to do this there is a great benefit to be had. If your child is one who struggles to learn from books, and requires a lot of interactive learning, this benefit will be greatly magnified.
In the final analysis, the choice of public school vs home school is never an easy one to make. It may take the pressure off you to realize that whichever choice you make is not irreversible. You can always revert to the other option in the future, although you should not do this unless you are now absolutely convinced that you have made the wrong choice. Talk it over with a support group if you are still undecided, and get advice which will help you solve the problem of public school vs home school.
